The Shibaoshan Scenic Area is located 25km southwest of Jianchuan County in the northwest section of the Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province. Shibaoshan, also known as Shanbao Mountain, is the southern branch of the LaoJun Mountain range.
Shibao Mountain is located in the midst of a picturesque landscape, with a broad view consisting of row upon row of mountain peaks, tranquil valleys, dense green forest, clear springs, and deep-buried ancient temple houses created by skilled Bai workers and talented artisans. The landscape here is fascinating and beautiful. Here "The Stone's in Blossom" matches very well with the natural landscape of red sandstone. These turtle-back stones were created by a century of rainwater，and it continues to developed. Besides, the Danxia landscape is the most picturesque view of all. Shibao Mountain was designated as the most important National tourist scenic area in China by the State Council in 1982. Also, the Shibaoshan Scenic Area is the centre part of the "Three Parallel Rivers', a UNESCO World Nature Heritage Site.
Shibao Mountain is well known not only for its breathtaking landscape, but also for its marvelous grottoes. The Shizhongshan Grottoes, known as "the gem of the south in Yunnan", were created by the ancient Bai People in the historical period of the Tan and Song Dynasties (850- 1179). For its high value, the Shizhongshan Grottoes (located southeast extension of Shibao Mountain) were listed as number one in the First Batch of National Key Cultural Relics under the State Protection level in 1961.
Under the main peak of Shibaoshan, there is Baoxiang Temple , it was built in the Yuan Dynasty(1271-1368), formerly known as "Yan Zhu Temple", which built on the cliff, known as Yunnan "Xuankong Si." Ming traveler, Xu Xiake had visited the temple and amazed on his travel notes. In recent years, there is a group of charmingly naive monkeys come to Baoxiang Temple, which adds a beautiful landscape to Baoxiang Temple.
Besides, the Shibaoshan Music Festival, a Bai people's special traditional festival, is held once a year at Shibao Mountain. It lasts three days, from the day before last day of the seventh lunar month to the first day of the eighth lunar month. During the festival, you can enjoy Bai people singing songs in their native dialect to the melodies floating from the Sanxian (a three stringed instrument). Some scholars both from home and abroad titled it "China Singing Town" or "Bai People's Lover Day".
