Transportation in Hong Kong

Hong Kong, a special administrative region of China, is one of the most affluent, most economically developed and the highest living standard districts in the world. As one of the "Four Asian tigers", is one of the international financial and commercial centers of the world. It is a transportation hub with a well-developed transportation system. You can get there by plane and train. All of them offer great convenience to visitors.

Getting there

◎By Plane

Hong Kong's main airport is Hongkong International Airport; it was rated as five-star airport by Skytrax. It has many international flights with connections to all wind directions that can reach most cities in the world. 

◎By Train  

Guangshen (Guangzhou and Shenzhen) high-speed rail is the only one to connecting the mainland in Hong Kong. Its starting point is the Guangzhou South Railway Station, approach Humen, Shenzhen, etc; destination is the west Kowloon station in the west of Hong Kong. Cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Zhaoqing, all of them can reach Hong Kong Hung Hom Station through Guangjiu Railroad Train.

Getting Around

◎By Subway

Subway is a very convenient way to get around the city. Hongkong has 9 subway lines, the subway system Start around 6 o 'clock every morning to walk until the middle of the night, every few minutes there is a metro. The fare is from 4 Yuan (two stations) to 51 Yuan (Lohu to Disney).

◎By Bicycle

Bicycle is a very popular way. Bike rental is available in several locations across the territory. Popular rental spots include Cheung Chau, Mui Wo (Lantau), Sha Tin, Tai Po Market, Tuen Mun and Ma On Shan. Rental fees are typically $20-30 a day for a standard entry-level mountain bike, or around $150 per day for a higher-spec mountain or road bike. 

◎By Bus

Bus is a very convenient way to get around the city. There are plenty of buses in Hongkong, most are air-conditioned. Urban ticket price is more than 2 Yuan per process. There are also many minibuses; minibuses are small buses that carry approximately 16 people. Green minibuses operate along specific routes at fixed prices. Once they’re full, minibuses won't stop for a new passenger until someone else gets off and a seat becomes available. 

◎By Tram

Only walks (north) in downtown of Hong Kong island, it charges the most inexpensive (present price 3 RMB), but it is slower.

◎By Taxi

Taxi is also a good way to travel around. There are three types of taxi in Hong Kong, easily identified by their colors: red, green and blue, all of which serve the airport and Hong Kong Disneyland, details are as the following:

The Urban (red) taxis 

Can travel anywhere within Hong Kong, and also the most expensive. The meter starts at $20.00 for the first 2 kilometers and a further $1.50 for every 200m thereafter, and $1.00 each ticking when the fare goes above $72.50.

NT (green) taxis 

Slightly cheaper than the red ones but are fundamentally confined to rural areas in the New Territories, the airport, Hong Kong Disneyland. 

Lantau (blue) taxis

(The cheapest of the three) operate only on Lantau Island (including the airport and Hong Kong Disneyland). 

◎By Ferry

There are plenty of companies operate ferry services in Hong Kong, such as Star Ferry, New World First Ferry, Hong Kong & Kowloon Ferry, HKR International Limited, Park Island Transport Company Ltd., etc.
