Festivals in Chengdu

The old saying, Beijing has many Yamen, Shanghai with larger number of western companies, Chengdu teahouse is abundant. Today, however, more people may be surprised at the many festivals in Chengdu. The festivals in Chengdu are not just the holidays, but enjoy life. According to our incomplete statistics, Chengdu has 152 local festivals. If you count the country’s statutory holidays and exotic festivals, Chengdu people have over 186 festivals a year. Chengdu becomes the city with most festivals in China.

The Grand Temple Fair

Chengdu’s annual Grand Temple Fair is held every year during the Spring Festival (Chinese New Year) in Wuhou Shrine, Jinli, the Culture Park, and several other city parks. The 15-day-long festival showcases both traditional Sichuan folk art and modern fashions of the city. Food stalls on site offer over 100 varieties of freshly made local snacks.

The Lantern Festival

Chengdu’s annual Lantern Festival is held every year during the Spring Festival in Tazishan Park in the eastern part of Chengdu. Lanterns of different designs and themes are on display with traditional art performances including Sichuan opera, acrobatics shows, and local talk shows.

The Dujiangyan Water Releasing Festival

The Dujiangyan Water-Releasing Festival takes place on the 5th of April each year in Du Jiang Yan, 58 km away from Chengdu. Residents dress up in ancient costumes and read elegies for Li Bing and his sons; in order to honor them for their contribution to the irrigation project they built over 2,000 years ago.

Huanglongxi International Dragon and Lion Culture and Arts Festival

Huanglongxi International Dragon and Lion Culture and Arts Festival is celebrated from the 2nd to the 15th day of the first lunar month of each New Year.

The Festival originated in the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279 A.D.), Activities include: light a fire dragon, colorful dragon performances, Southern Lion Dance, floating lanterns, the discharge of lanterns, fireworks show, held in spring fun evening, put the open-air movies, listen to Sichuan Opera and so on.

South China Ice and Snow Festival

The South China Ice and Snow Festival takes place from January to March at the Xiling Snow Mountain Ski Resort, where located 95 kilometers west of Chengdu. The festival is popular among locals, especially children, since it rarely snows in Chengdu and people relish the sight of snow. A large variety of snow activities are offered during the festival. On that occasion, sub-venues are also established in Jiuzhaigou Valley, Mount Emei, Hailuogou Valley, Longchi Lake, Wolong Giant Panda Nature Reserve, and Wawushan National Forest Park.

Chengdu Flower Fair

Chengdu Flower Fair is annually held in Qingyang Temple in February of the traditional Chinese calendar. The fair originated in the Tang Dynasty. During the festival, all the flower-growers display and promote their beautiful flowers in the temple.

Chengdu International Peach Blossom Festival

The Chengdu International Peach Blossom Festival takes place in Longquan Mountain from mid-March to the end of March, where located 13 kilometers east of Chengdu. The festival is popular among locals, especially the lovers. Activities include: large-scale theatrical performances, flowers show, water dragon festival, business talks.
